Before I did brake service on my 1966 VW beetle the brakes engaged pretty quickly but they weren't very "Grabby" it took a lot of effort to stop the car. after I replaced the front brake hoses and one of the wheel cylinders and bled and adjusted the brakes, now the brake pedal goes almost all the way to the floor. the brakes seem a lot more "Grabby" but there's wayyy too much travel in the brake pedal now. the shoes seemed ok when I checked them, and I adjusted them closer, so they can't be the problem. Sterling . How to Loosen Rounded Head BoltsRounded head bolts are extremely challenging to remove. You'll need special tools and a few hours to work on the bolts. Rounded head bolts are usually caused by over-torquing the bolt or improper removal procedures. When they need to be removed, the bolt head rounds off instead of breaking the bolt loose. The special tools you'll need are called bolt-out kits. A bolt-out socket has teeth on the inside of the socket that "bite" into the bolt head and let you remove the bolt. It will destroy the bolt, however, and you'll need a new one. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Bolt-out kit Socket wrench Step by Step : 1 Test-fit a bolt-out socket to the head of the head bolt. You want the smallest-sized socket that will fit over the rounded-off bolt. 2 Secure the bolt-out socket to a socket wrench as you would any ordinary socket. Then, place the socket and wrench over the head of the head bolt. 3 Turn the bolt counterclockwise. As you do this, the bolt-out socket should grab onto the bolt head and break the bolt loose. Once it does, remove the bolt as you would any other bolt by continuing to turn it counterclockwise until it is free. Tips & Warnings For specific information about your vehicle's head bolts, location and torque specifications, consult the particular vehicle's manual (see Resources).
Sterling . How to Remove a Stripped Head Bolt on a CarA stripped head bolt is difficult to remove. If the bolts on your engine head become stripped, usually due to over-torquing, you'll need to drill them out. Drilling involves serious risks but is probably the only way to remove a head bolt once the threads have been stripped or the head has been broken off. You'll need hardened drill bits for this job and a heavy-duty drill. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Drill Hardened drill-bit set Magnet wand Step by Step : 1 Fit the drill bit to the head bolt. You want the drill bit to be just slightly smaller than the bolt. There is a danger that you will destroy the threads on the engine head by drilling out the bolt. Reduce this risk by using a drill bit that is smaller than the head bolt but large enough to destroy the bolt enough so that you can remove it. 2 Secure the drill bit into the drill and tighten the chuck by turning it counterclockwise. 3 Center the drill bit on the head bolt and start drilling slowly. You want to create a starter groove so that at higher speeds, the drill bit does not wander and damage the engine head. 4 Increase speed slowly until you are drilling into the head bolt. Be careful not to let the drill wander. Make sure you are drilling into the center of the bolt. 5 Remove the bolt pieces with a magnet wand as you drill. Periodically, parts of the bolt will chip and break apart. Stop drilling and remove any pieces that are in your way with the magnet. 6 Continue drilling and using the magnet wand until all of the bolt has been removed. A 0O Part V: Helping Your Car Look Its Best Look for unpainted spaces around the edges of door handles, chrome, and other fittings. These parts should be removed, rather than masked, so that the paint extends under them and protects the area from rust. If inadequate masking has allowed the paint to overspray these and other unpainted surfaces, refuse to pay until the unwanted paint has been completely removed. Compare newly painted parts to other areas to be sure that the color matches the older paint exactly. Because bodywork requires such expertise, buying a new bumper or piece of trim (or locating an unflawed one at a wrecker's) is often less expensive than restoring the damaged part. Many modern vehicles have thin, relatively inexpensive body panels that are designed to be replaced rather than repaired. They crumple so easily that they're as difficult to straighten as tinfoil, and it's cheaper and easier to have a new panel installed and painted. If extensive areas of a metal car body need to be repaired, have those dam Sterling . How do you define a car?

This imagery may seem unduly grim, but I honestly believe that, over the years, more fine vehicles have given way to the ravages of rust than have been demolished in accidents. The first line of defense against rust is to wash and wax your vehicle regularly. See Chapter 23 for tips on doing these and other cleaning chores. Checking for rust If you live in an area where the streets are still salted in winter, where it rains or snows a great deal, or near the seashore — in other words, anywhere your car is exposed to moisture and/or salt — you must be especially vigilant about detecting and getting rid of rust quickly. However, even if you live in a dry climate, you must still make a habit of checking carefully every few months. If you find rust forming, get rid of it before it can do major damage. Chapter 24: Getting Rid of Dings, Dents, and Other Hard Knocks The paint on your car is there not only for beauty, but for protection as well. Paint and clear-coat finishes help retard rust. As long as your paint job is unmarred, metal body surfaces are safe. But something as seemingly innocuous as a small scratch that nobody but you notices can spell the beginning of trouble.
